Welcome to Early Years

The Early Years Program began in 1986 with 1 classroom at Lafayette School, 2 teachers and a teacher's aide. There were 15 students the first year.

Today the program has grown to include 8 classrooms in our Early Years Center at 516 Jordan Street. We also have a classroom in Murrayville at the Murrayville United Methodist Church hall. There are 9 teachers, 9 paraprofessionals, 3 Parent Educators, a Principal, a secretary, a nurse, and 2 custodians on staff to serve 240 students.

A Birth to 3 program staffed by 7 Parent Educators has also been added to Early Years to provide services and support for families with younger children and expectant mothers. The Birth to 3 program currently serves about 100 families within the Jacksonville School District.

We have enjoyed serving the Jacksonville community for over 30 years and look forward to many more years of growth and learning!

Late Start Due to Inclement Weather

Early Years will be utilizing “Late Start” days due to extreme wind chill temperatures or icy road conditions according to Jacksonville School District guidelines. On Late Start days, school will begin two (2) hours later than usual and buses will run their regular routes unless otherwise noted.

Full Day classes will begin at 10:00 a.m. and there will be no Half Day AM classes.

Full Day students who ride the bus to school will be picked up two (2) hours later than usual.

Before School Care will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Late Start days.

Half Day PM classes and buses will run on their regular schedules.

“Late Start” is an option to allow school districts to continue with school (while starting later) and therefore eliminate the use of a snow day.  The decision for wind chill and ice situations should be made by approximately 5:30 a.m.  Notice will be sent by the Superintendent or Principal via School Messenger as soon as a determination has been made. In addition to School Messenger, we will notify the local radio and television stations of Late Start by 5:30 am. Listen to the following stations for weather-related school closings:

Arrival & Dismissal:

Parent/visitor parking is allowed in the west lot. The east lot is for staff parking and loading and unloading of buses only. Families and visitors to the Early Years Program may NOT park in the High School Apartments parking lot directly across from our building. The lot is private property and unauthorized vehicles may be towed at their discretion.

The main door at the front of the building on Jordan Street is the only entrance and exit to be used by families and children or any other visitors to Early Years.

From 8:00 to 8:35 please take students to their classroom. After 8:35 you must sign them in at the office. For afternoon classes, if after 12:00 p.m., you must sign them in at the office.
Be sure that your child is never left alone and walk them to the Gym or the classroom door. Parents bringing children to PM classes will need to be buzzed in and wait with their child in the foyer.

All buildings are locked for student safety. The Early Years building is locked after
8:35 a.m. and will remain locked for the rest of the day. Visitors (including parents and caregivers) must check-in at the office, if after 8:35 for full day/morning classes or 12:00 for afternoon classes, to receive a pass before being welcomed into the classroom
.
At dismissal, children will be released to the parent by the teacher or assistant in front of the school building. For safety reasons, you must walk up to receive your child; we will not send them to you. Weather permitting, children will be in their designated class area in front of the school for pickup. In the case of inclement weather, students may be picked up in the Gym.
